Interview with Steve Bliss, Wildomar Estate Planning Attorney

Reporter: Brenda Sanchez

Today we’re talking with Steve Bliss, a renowned estate planning attorney serving the Wildomar community. Mr. Bliss, thank you for joining us.

Steve Bliss: It’s my pleasure to be here, Brenda.

I’m always happy to discuss the importance of estate planning with anyone who will listen.

Reporter: You work with clients on all aspects of estate planning. Which step in the process do you find people often overlook or struggle with?

That’s a great question, Brenda. Many individuals underestimate the significance of naming beneficiaries and fail to update them regularly. This can lead to unintended consequences, particularly if family dynamics shift or beneficiaries predecease the estate holder.

Ordinarily, people designate beneficiaries when they initially establish their will or trust. However, life is full of unexpected turns. Circumstances change – relationships evolve, individuals pass away, and new family members enter the picture.

Consequently, it’s crucial to review your beneficiary designations periodically, at least every three to five years, or whenever a major life event occurs, such as marriage, divorce, birth, or death in the family. Failure to do so can result in assets being distributed to individuals who are no longer intended recipients or, conversely, to unintended heirs.

Moreover, I’ve encountered situations where clients forgot they had named a beneficiary years ago on a retirement account. When they passed away, that account went to someone they hadn’t seen in decades. It’s heartbreaking for the family and can lead to legal disputes.

I always emphasize the importance of keeping beneficiary designations up-to-date with my clients. A recent study by Caring.com found that nearly 60% of Americans haven’t reviewed their beneficiaries in the past five years. That’s a startling figure, and it highlights the need for greater awareness about this crucial aspect of estate planning.

Reporter: That is certainly something for everyone to keep in mind. Thank you for sharing that insight, Mr. Bliss. What advice would you give to someone just starting to think about estate planning?

Don’t delay! Start the process as soon as possible. It’s never too early to begin thinking about your legacy and how you want your assets distributed. By taking proactive steps now, you can ensure that your wishes are carried out and your loved ones are protected.
