Estate Planning Interview with Steve Bliss

A Conversation with Moreno Valley’s Trusted Estate Planning Attorney

Hello everyone, I’m Brenda Martinez reporting for Moreno Valley News Today. I’m here today with Steve Bliss, a renowned estate planning attorney serving the Moreno Valley community. Mr. Bliss, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me.

The Importance of Naming Beneficiaries

Steve, many people put off estate planning because they find it overwhelming. Could you discuss one key step in the process that might be easier to grasp than others?

Certainly Brenda. One crucial yet often overlooked step is naming beneficiaries for your assets. This involves clearly identifying who will inherit your possessions, such as bank accounts, real estate, or investments, upon your passing.

Think of it like setting a roadmap for your belongings after you’re gone. Without designated beneficiaries, your assets may be subject to probate court proceedings, which can be lengthy and expensive. This step ensures that your wishes are respected and your loved ones receive what you intend for them.

Moreover, it’s important to keep beneficiary designations up-to-date. Life circumstances change—marriages, divorces, births, and deaths all occur. Regularly reviewing and updating your beneficiaries helps avoid unintended consequences. According to a recent study by Caring.com, over 40% of Americans haven’t reviewed their beneficiary designations in the past five years.

Once, I had a client who thought she had named her daughter as the sole beneficiary of her life insurance policy. It turned out, however, that she hadn’t updated it after her divorce, and her ex-husband remained listed as the beneficiary. This oversight caused significant distress for both my client and her daughter.

Accordingly, I strongly advise everyone to make a list of all their assets, including retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and bank accounts, and ensure they have named clear beneficiaries. Doing so will provide peace of mind knowing that your assets are destined for the right people.
